Builders’ exchanges exist across California, but here in Humboldt the needs are unique—and so is our approach. The Times-Standard recently invited Executive Director Jada Brotman and Vice President Jason Jordan to explain how the Humboldt Builders’ Exchange serves contractors, suppliers, tradespeople, and students across the county. Their column, reprinted below, provides an inside look at how HBE supports its members and invests in the future of the industry.

If you’ve ever wondered how Humboldt County’s construction community stays connected, informed, and thriving, look no further than the Humboldt Builders’ Exchange (HBE). This local, member-driven nonprofit serves contractors, subcontractors, suppliers, and trades professionals across the county. While builders’ exchanges exist throughout California, HBE is uniquely tailored to the needs and challenges of building in Humboldt County.
At its core, HBE is a hub for industry information and opportunity. Members rely on its online plan room to access upcoming public and private construction projects, review plans and specifications, and track bid opportunities. In an industry where timing and accurate information are critical, this centralized resource helps local businesses stay competitive and organized.
Education is another cornerstone of HBE’s mission. The Exchange hosts workshops, trainings, and presentations throughout the year on topics like workplace safety, regulatory updates, and best practices in the trades. These events equip members to navigate a construction landscape shaped by evolving regulations, technology, and workforce demands.
Beyond plans and permits, HBE fosters strong community connections. Construction is a fast-paced, demanding field, and the Exchange creates opportunities for members to step away from the job site and connect with peers. Events like the annual Christmas party, charity golf tournament, and Women in Construction mixers bring people together across companies and trades. These gatherings strengthen professional relationships, encourage collaboration, and raise funds for initiatives like HBE’s scholarship program.
Investing in the future of the industry is a priority for HBE. Its scholarship program supports students and apprentices pursuing careers in construction-related fields. Last year, HBE awarded several thousand dollars for scholarships to students from Eureka, McKinleyville, Redway, and Ferndale studying engineering, carpentry, and project management. By supporting education and training, HBE ensures a skilled workforce for years to come.
The Exchange also celebrates excellence within the trades, recognizing individuals whose dedication, leadership, and craftsmanship leave a lasting impact on their workplaces and the community. These efforts highlight the pride and professionalism that define Humboldt County’s construction industry.
HBE keeps members informed with a weekly bulletin featuring updates on projects, events, industry news, and regulatory changes, ensuring they stay connected and up to date.
This commitment to communication and accessibility continues with the launch of HBE’s new website, set to go live next week. The updated site will feature a user-friendly design, an enhanced events calendar with easy registration, and a modernized referral guide to connect the public with local contractors and trades professionals. The website reflects HBE’s dedication to embracing technology while serving the local building community.
In a region with unique challenges — from geography and infrastructure to workforce development — the Humboldt Builders’ Exchange stands alongside builders, offering resources and practical solutions. By supporting today’s professionals and investing in tomorrow’s workforce, HBE plays a vital role in strengthening Humboldt County’s construction community and the future it is building.
